How to plan your retirement corpus and charity fund?
[ad_1]
My retirement is about 8 years from now and, so far, I have ₹52 lakh invested in mutual funds and stocks, ₹25 lakh in a Public Provident Fund (PPF), and roughly ₹26 lakh in my Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF). My monthly expenses amount to around ₹1 lakh, with savings of ₹62,000 per month. This year, my EPF contribution is ₹1.2 lakh. Additionally, I aim to allocate ₹15 lakh for charity work, post-retirement. How do I structure my retirement corpus?
—Name withheld on request
If we consider inflation of 6% then the monthly amount required for regular expenses at the time of your retirement will be ₹1.60 lakh. The inflation will continue during your post-retirement period as well. If we assume an overall portfolio return of 9% per annum (p.a.) during the post-retirement period, then you will need a corpus of ₹3.45 crore. This accumulated amount can easily help you take care of your post-retirement stage for 25 years.
Your present investments in mutual funds, stocks, PPF and EPF, including an annual contribution of ₹1.20 lakh every year in EPF, could help you reach ₹2.35 crore at your retirement. The charity amount of ₹15 lakh today will be close to ₹24 lakh at your retirement, assuming 6% inflation. Hence, we need to invest to build the additional corpus of ₹1.34 crore for your retirement and charity work requirements. As you have 8 years for retirement and do not have any short-term objectives, you can consider investing in equity mutual funds. You already have a monthly investment from your salary getting invested in EPF, hence investing the bare minimum amount in PPF, going forward, could be a better strategy as it will allow you to invest most of the amount in equity mutual funds.
Assuming a return of 12% p.a., you will need to invest ₹86,000 per month to build the complete corpus for both your goals. As your present monthly investible surplus is ₹62,000, you can still reach the goal by increasing your monthly investment by 11% every year.

MoRTH builds 12,349 km of highways in FY24, second highest after FY21
[ad_1]
MoRTH constructed its second-highest length of national highways in a fiscal in FY24 with 12,349 kilometres, next to FY21 when it built 13,327 kilomet
…
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has constructed 12,349 kilometres of national highways across India in the last financial year, which concluded in March 2024, reported PTI. The report further stated that MoRTH reached its second-highest level of national highway construction in FY24, next to FY21, when it constructed a record 13,327 kilometres of NH across the country.
In FY23, MoRTH reportedly constructed 10,331 kilometres of national highways, while in the previous financial year, in FY22, 10,457 kilometres of national highways were constructed across India. Back in FY20, national highways of 10,237 kilometres were built, stated the report.
Quoting a government official, the news agency has reported that in FY24, the MoRTH awarded a total of 8,581 national highway projects across India. He reportedly also revealed that the capital expenditure including private investment during the last financial year touched an all-time high level of ₹301,200 crores. According to the official, the total length of national highways across the country increased 1.6 times in the last 10 years. He reportedly claimed that while the total length of national highways across India was 91,287 kilometres in 2014, it has increased to 146,145 kilometres in 2024.
Further revealing the initiatives of MoRTH, the government official stated that the Indian government has launched a pilot project to provide cashless treatment to road accident victims. Under this initiative, road accident victims will be entitled to cashless treatment of up to ₹1.5 lakh, for which the costs will be borne by the government.
Meanwhile, MoRTH is also planning to introduce a new toll tax collection system across India, which would abolish the FASTag and conventional toll plazas across the country. Instead, the ministry is planning to introduce a GPS-based toll collection system, which will make it necessary for all vehicles to come equipped with GPS.

Are NRIs allowed to take loans from their siblings in India?
[ad_1]
I am a non-resident Indian (NRI) living in Germany. I have recently sold an immovable property in India and reinvested the sale proceeds (post tax deducted at source) in another residential property as per instructions of my tax consultant to save tax in India. Though the capital gains will not be taxed in India, I will still have to pay capital gains tax in Germany. Since I invested the sale proceeds in a new property in India already, I find myself short on funds to fulfil my tax obligations in Germany. I am considering seeking a temporary loan from my sibling who resides in India to cover the capital gains tax in Germany. However, what will be the potential tax implications for my sibling?
—Name withheld on request
A resident individual is permitted to provide a rupee loan to any of their siblings in their NRO (non-resident ordinary) account under the LRS (Liberalized Remittance Scheme) framework. However, the loan arrangement is subject to certain conditions such as minimum tenure, end use negative list, mode of repayment, etc. One of the conditions also state that the loan amount cannot be remitted outside India.
Additionally, a resident individual is not permitted to lend to any person outside India in foreign exchange. Therefore, unfortunately you won’t be able to receive loan in any manner from your sibling who is a resident in India.
However, you may accept the funds by way of a gift from your sibling. Your sibling can gift the funds to you in your NRO account in India or in your foreign bank account whichever suits you. Either mode of receipt would come under the LRS framework that will be applicable to your sibling.
Also, the transfer of funds would be subject to TCS (tax collected at source) payment in India for your sibling and such TCS can be claimed by your sibling as a credit towards eventual tax liability.
The transaction would not be subject to tax in India for you since gifting between siblings does not attract tax in India.

Oppo Reno 11 Series Will Soon Get AI Eraser Feature as Global Rollout Begins
[ad_1]

Oppo Reno 11 series will soon get its first artificial intelligence (AI) feature — the AI Eraser. The smartphone maker introduced its native large language model (LLM) AndesGPT in November 2023 to build AI features for its phones in-house. It later introduced a suite of AI features in the Oppo Find X7 series. In February 2024, the company announced that it would start shipping these features to other Oppo smartphones, starting with the Reno 11 series. Finally, the company has begun rolling out the first AI feature globally.
Notably, the AI Eraser feature debuted in the Reno 11 series in China earlier this month but it was not rolled out to the rest of the world. Now, the company has officially confirmed that the feature will be added to all devices globally. The announcement was made by Billy Zhang, President of Overseas Marketing, Sales and Services at Oppo, who said in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), “We’re so excited to bring the Oppo AI Eraser to overseas users. More and more people are going to experience this highly accessible and cutting-edge tech.”
The AI Eraser is a photo editing tool which can be found within the in-built gallery app. Once a user circles any object in the background, the AI processes and removes it, while restoring the background elements. This can be a useful feature to remove unwanted people or random objects from memorable images. The feature is similar to Google’s Magic Eraser and Samsung’s Object Eraser.
However, this is unlikely to be the only AI feature that is added to the Oppo Reno 11 series, which comprises the vanilla Reno 11 and the Reno 11 Pro. Oppo added multiple AI features to its ColorOS New Year Edition update in China in February 2024. These were added to the Reno 11 lineup as well as the Reno 10 series, Find N3, Find N3 Flip, and several OnePlus models.
Apart from the AI Eraser, other features that were introduced include an AI Call Summary feature where the AI generates a written summary of a call with time stamps after the call is disconnected, an AI image generator, an AI greeting card maker, and more. These features could also be rolled out in the coming months.
